Each of the four sessions will consist of a lecture and a seminar. In the lectures, I will provide context and background information. This will serve to set up group discussion. The seminars are participative and interactive, with a focus on critical dialogue and discussion. To make the most of this time, it is essential that you prepare for each session by doing the assigned reading(s) and looking over other materials I might assign (eg. online DH projects).
All readings for these sessions are available for access/download on this page. Please make sure to read the “Required Readings.” The “Recommended Readings” are optional – I will discuss these in my lectures. If you have time, please familiarise yourself with them beforehand.
In the seminars, we will also conduct practical research exercises. For this, it will be ideal if you can bring a laptop or tablet with internet access to class.

In this session, we will reconsider the beginnings of Digital Humanities scholarship, with a specific focus on ‘distant reading’ as a new technique of text-based scholarship in Literary Studies. Following the lecture, our discussion will focus on formulating an up-dated critique of ‘distant rading.’ We will also look at and analyse relevant DH projects together.
